When starting a new website, one of the most important things to get you started is the ability to get backlinks. The greater number of backlinks pointing to your site, the better chance you have of being recognized by the search engines. However, finding how and where to go to get these is not always easy for those starting out on the path.

However, you should set up a blog that will essentially sell your site for you. Make sure you work on it every day, and post excerpts from the best areas of your site, with backlinks to the relevant page on the site. Be sure not to give too much of the good stuff away, so you generate the click you need.

Another effective technique is to use Link Baiting, but you should be careful not to abuse this and drift into spam. People like to read and comment about controversies or even mildly offensive subjects. If they are shocked or intrigued by a subject you have written, they are more likely to tell their contacts and write about it on their own blogs with backlinks to your original posting.

Very similar to both of these methods is getting involved on forums. Establish a reputation as a valuable and entertaining contributor, you will be able to embed a backlink in your signature, and use such selling techniques as, "I have written more about this", or "This is something I have considered for a while", and ask them to visit your pages. Be careful to again not cross the line of spamming, and target your musings responsibly.

Other than creating a great site, that people will want to visit, build up a strong relationship with other webmasters, and let them know you are open to Link Exchanging. Advise them you are willing to exchange links. Target your mail shots carefully though, and ensure their sites have a natural connection with yours. Do not spam webmasters. This is a sure fire way to get trashed.

Finally, take a look at free web directories and submit your links to them. There are a host of these around, and are quite easy to find from on searches. It will take some time, but it will be worth trawling through them all and getting your site out there, particularly in the first instance.
